Sun Safety & Chemical Peels: Debunking the Summer Myth

As the days grow longer and temperatures rise, summer calls us outdoors and out in the sun. While soaking up the sun's rays can feel rejuvenating, and help your vitamin D levels, it's crucial to remember that prolonged  unprotected exposure to sunlight can lead to long-term damage to our skin. At REFRESH Medical Spa & Wellness, we prioritize not only the  beauty of your skin, but also the health and wellness of our clients. This summer, we're delving into the importance of sun safety and “protecting your investment!” Maintenance and  recurring treatments help bring out your skin’s natural beauty. During the summer months, you can continue to have treatments like Microneedling (with PRP or exosomes), facials, dermaplaning, and chemical peels, to name a few, with proper skin care and post care guidance.

The Golden Rule of Summer: Sun Safety

With the allure of a sun-kissed glow, it is essential to understand the risks associated with excessive sun exposure. Ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun can cause premature aging, including wrinkles, sunspots, and sagging skin. Furthermore, UV exposure is the primary cause of skin cancer, including melanoma. Protecting your skin from the sun's harmful rays is a must in maintaining healthy and radiant skin.

At REFRESH Medical Spa & Wellness, we advocate for a comprehensive approach to sun safety:

  1. Sunscreen: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher every day, even on cloudy days. REFRESH MD is SPF 40- 46. Be sure to reapply every two hours, especially if swimming or sweating.

  2. Seek Shade: Limit your time in direct sunlight, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. when the sun's rays are strongest.

  3. Protective Clothing: Wear sun-protective clothing, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses to shield your skin and eyes from UV damage.

  4. Avoid Tanning Beds: Indoor tanning beds emit UV radiation that can be even more damaging than natural sunlight, increasing the risk of skin cancer and premature aging.

Chemical Peels in the Summertime

While sun safety is an essential part of a healthy skincare routine, it does not mean you have to forego your skincare treatments during the summer months. It is a common misconception that chemical peels should be avoided during the sunny season. However, with proper guidance, chemical peels can be safely incorporated into your summer skincare routine!

Chemical peels are known for their ability to rejuvenate the skin by removing dead cells, thereby reducing the appearance of wrinkles, acne scars, and hyperpigmentation. However, they can also make the skin more sensitive to sunlight, leading to potential complications such as sunburn and hyperpigmentation if proper precautions are not taken. Consequently, many individuals shy away from chemical peels during the summer months, fearing the heightened risk of sun damage. While it's true that chemical peels require extra caution in the presence of sunlight, they can be safely performed in the summer with proper skin care guidance:

  1. Avoid Direct Sunlight: Limit your time in direct sunlight, especially during peak hours when the sun's rays are strongest. Seek shade whenever possible and wear protective clothing, including wide-brimmed hats and sunglasses, to shield your skin from UV radiation. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen and avoid prolonged sun exposure for at least two weeks before and after the treatment.

  2. Hydration: Keep your skin hydrated before and after the peel with a gentle moisturizer recommended by your skincare specialist. Hydrated skin is better equipped to withstand the effects of the peel and subsequent sun exposure.

  3. Avoid Harsh Products: Refrain from using harsh skincare products, such as retinoids and exfoliants, for at least one week prior to your chemical peel.

  4. Follow Post-Peel Instructions: Adhere to your skincare specialist's post-chemical peel instructions diligently to minimize irritation and promote healing.
